その同じ家族を17年間にわたり撮影した、世界で唯一の写真集。
ベドウィン（Bedouin、アラビア語でバーディーヤ『荒地に住む人達』の意味）とはアラブ系遊牧民のこと。アラビア半島を中心に中東の全域の砂漠に住み、砂漠で羊・ラクダ・ヤギを飼育する。
ベドウィンはアラブの祖、原点である。元来「アラブ」と言う言葉はベドウィンを指し、彼らも自身を「アラブ」としか呼ばない。
「沙漠は日本にあるのか？」とよく聞かれた。「ない」と答えると「それは良くない。沙漠は清潔で、ここにはすべてがある。」と誇らしげに言い切られる。
町での便利な生活をすることも出来るのに、彼らは決して沙漠を出ようとしない。
私達はお金と便利な物達を手に入れ、繁栄の道を登り続けているのに物に縛られ物に使われている。便利な物が良い物とは限らない。便利な物が必要な物とは限らない。彼らにとって生活の豊かさの基準が違うのだ。
電気も水道もなく、私達よりはるかに少ない物しか持っていないが、相互扶助を実践し、年長者を敬い、慎み深く、自制心が強く、家族を愛し、思いやりに溢れ、私たちより心豊かに暮らしている。
ベドウィンは何者にも犯されず犯す事もない。ここには平和がある！のである。

As my lifework, I have taken photographs of Bedouins living in the desert of Syria
This is the only photo book in the world which captured one and the same Bedouin family over 17 years
Bedouins, who refer to themselves simply as Arabs (originally, “Arab” was synonymous with “Bedouin”), are nomads who live in the deserts of the Middle East, mainly on the Arabian Peninsula, raising sheep, camels, and goats.
The Bedouins of Syria do not measure wealth according to the material goods or objects they own. Unencumbered by excessive possessions, and without most amenities, including electricity or running water, they pursue their lives and livelihoods in peace, practicing an ethic of mutual assistance, devotion to family, respect for the elderly, and self-discipline. What they may lack in things is compensated by their fulfilling and meaningful way of life. Indeed, I feel they enjoy a degree of freedom that those of us in industrial societies have forfeited through our pursuit of money and modern conveniences.
Offered an opportunity to join the settled lifestyle of the town, many Bedouins choose to remain rooted in their age-old nomadic tradition. But their numbers are nevertheless in sharp decline. The government’s vigorous resettlement policy of integrating them into the larger society, combined with the lure of modern conveniences, is often simply too difficult to resist.
Those who remain in the desert tending their animals and living very much just as their ancestors did, have on more than one occasion expressed their sympathy to me upon learning that in my country, Japan, there are no deserts. “That is not good,” they told me, “for only in the desert all that is good and can be found.”
